This report is about the E-C translation of three chapters taken from Environmental Management and Development under the guidance of skopos theory.Environmental Management and Development is about environmental crisis, environmental management and the national and global development, focusing on the role of the environmental management plays in the development of developing countries. It also suggests practical environmental management skills and problem-solving techniques. It is necessary and helpful to translate such a work into Chinese and thus introduce it to China where better environmental management techniques are urgently called for.The source text is direct and plain,a full-scale and in-depth analysis, however, unveils that it is full of connotations and nuances that only make sense in the context of western culture.A literal translation will undoubtedly fail to faithfully convey the information contained in the original text to Chinese readers. In this condition, skopos theory, which prioritizes the target text, the target reader, and the target culture in which the translation is to be merged, proves to be consultable in producing a translation that can accurately and comprehensively convey the original information to Chinese readers.Under the guidance of skopos theory, the translation project reported here, tries to solve the translation problems encountered no matter on the level of the word, the syntax or the text,by following three essential rules, namely, the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule. Some examples of E-C translation on the above mentioned three levels are chosen as representative cases and analyzed in detail in the report to illustrate the specific translation skills employed to achieve the purpose of this translation project, namely,to produce a coherent translation that is both faithful to the original text and congenial to the target readers. The report concludes that, since skopos theory emphasizes the skopos, coherence and fidelity of a translation practice,it might provide practical guidance in translating the text of social science type which values these qualities.
