Globalization has increased the number of Chinese learners in the world year by year.In the United States,in addition to primary,middle school and collage students leaning Chinese,it has become a new fashion for the elderly to learn Chinese.The needs of learning Chinese for the elderly is different from adolescents.However,there is little attention or research paid to this phenomenon in the academic world,which is almost blank.This study mainly used the questionnaire survey method,with the interview,classroom observation method,and introspection method,investigated the learning needs of 42 elderly Chinese learners aged 55 or older in New York and then used SPSS 22 to analyze the data.This study focus on the following three questions: What are the group characteristics of elder Chinese learners in New York? What is the present situation for their study? What are their Chinese learning needs? Through in-depth research on the needs of elderly Chinese learners,this paper aims to provide detailed case materials and specific teaching guidance and suggestions for elderly Chinese teaching in terms of teaching arrangement and teacher training.This paper includes six parts: introduction,four main chapters and conclusion.The introduction part summarizes the background,research reason,significance and value of the thesis.The first chapter is the theoretical framework and research review.It includes the history and review of needs analysis theory in nation and foreign countries,the history of development of lifelong education theory and elderly Chinese teaching review.The second chapter introduces the research subject,research questions,research method,research process and data collection.The third chapter analyzes the research data and answers the three research questions in this paper,including the group characteristics of elderly Chinese learners in New York,their present situation for study and their learning needs.The fourth chapter is the findings and suggestions of the research.It analyzes the research findings and give some suggestions in the teaching arrangement and teacher education of elderly Chinese teaching.In the conclusion part,the author discusses and summaries the research subject,research method,research questions,research findings and research suggestions of the whole paper.
