This dissertation takes the novel the Supplement of Journey to the West as the research object. With its Zen thought as the research category,it makes a thorough and meticulous inquiry into the Supplement of Journey to the West, which is regarded as a god-demon novel.First,it proves that Dong Shuo is the author of the Supplement of Journey to the West by using the research method of philology. On the basis of strong evidence put forward by predecessors,it discovers Dong Shuo's many records of JingXiao Study, and Dong Shuo's Yuefu's Poem A Dream about Peony which is highly similar to the plot of the novel. At the same time, through the use of literary research methods of knowing people and discussing the world,it explores the development of Zen thought in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Zen complex of Dong Shuo's family, and Dong Shuo's own Things related to Zen Buddhism and Zen research works, and then finds out the distinct and unique ideological characteristics of Dong Shuo's Zen buddhism with Confucianism and Yi Buddhism. On this basis, through the use of literary criticism methods such as close reading of the text,it shows the connotation of being clear-minded from the novel text, the recreation of the characters, and the use of the dream.Besides, from the plots and themes of the novel,it reveals that everything is empty in the Zen Buddhism.Furthermore, from the time and space form of the novel,it shows the aesthetics of Emptiness from the space-time structure of the novel. Therefore, the novel the Supplement of Journey to the West is very dramatic, containing the author's Zen Buddhist thought. At present, there are few specialized studies on this aspect. This dissertation makes a preliminary study of the novel from the perspective of Zen Buddhism, which is helpful to promote the study of this novel to a more comprehensive and in-depth situation.
