Herman Hesse(1877-1962)is an outstanding German novelist in the 20 th century.His creation started with lyric poetry and lyric prose,and his later main creation was novels.Romance is an important theme of poetry,and pursuing personal growth is an important theme of the novel.He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1946 because of his high creativity and deep insight,and his classical humanitarian ideal and noble style.Through his works,Hesse tells the world about his pursuit of romance and loneliness,his exploration of himself,and his perception of life.The spirit of unremitting progress in his writing is infecting generations of people.From the perspective of close reading,the author divides Hesse's novels into three periods,chooses six corresponding masterpieces,Nostalgia and Under the Wheel,Wandering Youth and The Song of the Wanderer,Knowledge and Love and The Game of glass beads,analyzes the themes of romance and loneliness,growth and exploration,opposition and unity,and combines the author's life experience The author analyzes the creation and theme change of the writer's creative psychology.And further explore the theme of these three periods to people's thinking and the significance of the times.The thesis is divided into five parts: introduction,body and conclusion.The introduction mainly talks about Hesse and his works,and the summary of Hesse's theme research.The first chapter mainly analyzes the theme of the novel.There are a lot of analysis on the theme of Hesse's novels on HowNet,including one theme in one novel,one theme in many novels,or one theme in one period of works.This thesis divides Hesse's whole creation into three periods.Based on the representative works of each period,it analyzes the themes of romance and loneliness,growth and pursuit,opposition and unity in Hesse's works.The second chapter combines Hesse's life and social background to analyze the creation and evolution of these themes.Life experience affects one's temperament,and social background influences the change of the writer's writing style and theme.The research object of this paper is the theme of Hesse's three periods,so the three sections of the second chapter combine the writer's life and social background of these three periods respectively to explore the influence of the writer's life experience on the birth of the theme,and at the end of the chapter summarize the evolution process of the novel theme from the youth to the old age.The third chapter discusses the connotation of the theme of Hesse's works and its enlightenment value for personal growth by combining the theory of romanticism,Jung's theory of self nature and Lao Tzu's theory of unity of opposites.The persistence of life,whether romantic theme or lonely theme,is mainly based on personal subjective feelings,following the tension of individual life.The pursuit of self is reflected in the theme of Hesse's works in every period,but the growth and exploration theme of the mid-term creation is more prominent in this sense.Reconciliation with the world is not only the wisdom contained in the theme of his later works,but also Hesse's perception of life from old age,including the philosophy of how to live and deal with life.The conclusion part summarizes that the creation theme of Hesse in each period pays close attention to the growth of the hero's personal soul,so to study the theme of Hesse's novels,we not only have a deep understanding of Hesse's works,but also can get the growing truth of life.No matter how the times change,the inner mountains and gullies that the long river of life will flow through will not change,so the study of the theme of Hesse's novels has eternal significance for generations of people's growth and enlightenment.
