| Daphne du Maurier is a well known contemporary British novelist and biographer,a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and a prolific writer throughout his life, leaving behind 17 novels as well as dozens of biographies and other literary works. Her novels focus on plot and characterization of the character, with fascinating drama. She is good at writing about women’s life, women’s growth, women’s love, women’s difficulties in life, society’s oppression of women, women in the family trivial life brought about by the troubles in the face of helplessness and resistance. For a long time, the literary world did not recognize her talent as an outstanding writer. She was once criticized as a female writer who did not completely break away from the slavery of the male culture. In contrast to the above views, the author believes that Daphne du Maurier is not seeking the binary opposition between male power and female power in the world of the two sexes, she has been trying to find a balance between male power and female power.Daphne du Maurier has a strong sense of responsibility as a writer, her writing does not stop at the awakening of the female subject consciousness, she is more efforts to find a new model of healthy harmony between the sexes, rather than intensify contradictions. Therefore,it is not difficult to understand that this kind of gentle and inclusive gender view has been criticized in the era of Women’s Liberation Movement, which is interpreted as "compromise" feminism. In fact, what Daphne du Maurier shows in her works is her high sense of responsibility to the society, her hope for a better life and her deep thinking on her fate and status. The two novels of Daphne du Maurier studied in this thesis are similar and related in their structure, style, characters and ideological content,in particular,"Rebecca" and "a dream of floating life" are more like a pair of sisters,"Rebecca" in which we see a compromise between women in the relationship, and "a dream of floating life" in which the author presents us with a compromise of men. When expressing the author’s value idea, advanced thought and so on,these two works are like a yin-yang picture, each occupying the Spring and autumn period, playing a complementary role. Therefore, the author intends to put these two novels together for research,in order to help integrate the writer’s ideas, creative purposes. This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter summarizes Daphne’s personal introduction, the significance of the topic, the literature review of the novel and the research methods of the thesis. The second chapter mainly takes the image as the breakthrough point, carries on the combing and the classification to the image object which often appears in Daphne’s work, explores its formation reason and the text value,to achieve a more objective interpretation of Daphne’s works and ideas. The third part of the thesis is to discuss the ideas contained in Daphne’s works,in order to realize a deeper understanding of the realistic value of Daphne’s work. |
