The idea of this paper derives from the “Standard of English Curriculum for Ordinary High School” revised in 2017 by the Ministry of Education. In order to improve students' thinking quality and learning ability, the idea is put forward of introducing concept maps into English tenses instruction in junior high schools to help students learn the concept and use of tenses. The main purpose is to change the current situation in China where students mechanically memorize tense rules, without understanding and reflecting on the nature and rules of this grammatical concept.Through the relevant English-tense study literature,it is known that tenses are grammatical categories that express the temporal relationship between the implicit behavior or state of verbs and the reference time. This paper integrates tense-related concepts from the perspective of concept maps to help students establish a systematic and comprehensive conceptual framework to avoid inefficiency and learning fatigue caused by repetitious mechanical drills. The theoretical basis of the paper is constructivism, thinking visualization and meaningful learning.According to relevant references,it is believed that concept maps can be applied in theory to English classroom teaching. Then,an English tense teaching experiment is conducted.Four major research questions are to be addressed in this paper:1.How can we design a set of Concept Maps that embrace targeted tenses.2.How can Concept Map be integrated with tense teaching process?3.Can the application of Concept Map improve learners' test scores in tense?4.Can the application of Concept Map positively change learners' attitudes towards tense learning? The experimental part was conducted in Zhong Guo Junior High School in Shanghai and lasted for three months. The data were tested by using SPSS19 and thefindings are as follows: 1)Before the experiment, the students think it difficult to remember some English tense concepts they have learned, because they think it is too abstract to understand them.2)After learning to use concept maps, students begin to become aware of the relationship of knowledge points consciously.3)Abstract concept map have certain advantages in junior high school English tense teaching, which includes two aspects: improvement of test scores and attitudinal change. With the findings, the author carried out an expanded thinking, hoping that this research can help front-line teachers and future researchers in a wider range. In the end,the author also points out the shortcomings of this paper, and puts forward proposals for further research in the subject.
