A Report On The C-E Translation Of The Intangible Cultural Heritage-Nanjing Yun Brocade

China is equipped with a splendid civilization of long history,boasting its abundant intangible cultural heritages.As one of China's intangible cultural heritages,Nanjing Yun Brocade represents the highest achievement of China's traditional silk weaving in the era of crafts.However,there are few English translation versions related to Nanjing Yun Brocade,which hinders the spread and also affects its inheritance and development.This translation report focuses on translating the series texts of Nanjing Yun Brocade provided by the Nanjing Culture and Tourism Publicity Committee into English,aiming at exploring the translation skills of publicity texts,showing to the readers the unique beauty of the Nanjing Yun Brocade.This practice report can be divided in terms of two perspectives—word and sentence.With the guidance of the publicity translation principle of “three close to” put forward by Huang Youyi,the author employs the translation skills such as lexical class shift to address the four-character phrases and the translation methods of transliteration,annotation,and paraphrase to deal with the culture-leaded words.At the syntactic level,the translator transforms long difficult sentences by adjusting the structural order and reassembling the structures and tackles the sentences without subjects by adding subjects and restructuring the sentence structures.Besides,the author deals with the sentences of redundancy by means of merging and deleting.Furthermore,this paper takes into full account of lingual distinctions between Chinese and English.Through this translation practice,the translator deeply feels that translation is a comprehensive undertaking,which requires all-round abilities,namely extensive background knowledge,solid theoretical foundation and sound bilingual expression ability.Besides,by reflecting and reviewing the difficulties in translation,the author acquires a deeper understanding of the translation of publicity texts.The author hopes that this practice report can provide some enlightenment for the future translation of intangible cultural heritage and make some contributions to the protection of it.
