Translation Strategies Of Dashes In Literary Work Ireland Unhinged From The Perspective Of Cohesion Theory

The source text chosen for this translation report is excerpted from a memoir entitled Ireland Unhinged.One of the most distinctive linguistic features in this book is that quite a lot of dashes are used in different parts of the book,so how to deal with them properly becomes one of the difficulties in translation.As we all know,punctuation is an important means of discourse cohesion and plays an important role in discourse coherence,so it is a factor that needs special attention and consideration in the process of translation.Based on Halliday and Hasan's discourse cohesion theory,this report attempts to provide some specific strategies to deal with the dashes in translation and to summarize the significance of cohesion theory in English-Chinese translation practice,so as to provide a reference for the English-Chinese translation of dashes in literary works.This report includes five chapters.Chapter One is task description,which mainly introduces the situation and difficulties of the task text,and discusses the significance of the research.Chapter Two is task process,including pre-translation preparation,the translation process and the proofreading after translation.Chapter Three is literature review and theoretical introduction.It introduces the research on cohesion theory and discusses the study on the cohesive function of English and Chinese dashes.Chapter Four as a main body of the report,makes a case study.Based on Halliday's theory of linking mode between clauses,this part makes a case study of the cohesive effect of dashes in the source text,and also explores and analyses the corresponding handling strategies,such as reserving or delete dashes.Chapter Five is the conclusion of this report.Through reviewing the whole process of translation practice,it summarizes the gains in this process.
