This report is based on the translation practice of the first three chapters in the book Macachiavellian Intelligence: How Rhesus Macaques and Humans Have Conquered the World. This social sciences text describes in detail the hierarchy and Machiavellian power struggles in the rhesus macaque society, creatively links the rhesus macaque society with the human society, and holds that there are certain similarities between them. The author uses a lot of technical terms and absorbs the knowledge of evolutionary biology, economics and other disciplines in his writing. However, the book is vivid in the language and interesting in the content. In the process of this translation practice, the translator encountered some difficulties in understanding and translating the technical terms and the sentences.Among them, the translation of dash was the most typical issue, because the dash appears 35 times just in the first three chapters(about 11,000 words)of the book. Therefore,on the basis of this translation practice, the translator did some research on the translation strategies of dash in the translation of the social sciences texts from the perspective of cohesion theory. With the translation methods of the English dash summarized in this practice report, the study is expected to provide an effective reference for the E-C translation of the similar text type. This practice report first introduces the reason for choosing the text for translation, the significance and the content of the research. Then it elaborates on the task process of this practice, including the preparation for the translation, the translation process and the post-translation proofreading.Next, the research on the cohesion theory and the translation strategies related to the function of dashes are reviewed. The main part is the case study,in which the dashes encountered in the translation practice are classified into three categories according to their cohesive functions of elaboration, extension and enhancement, and the translation strategies and methods, such as retention, conversion and deletion, exploited in the translation practice are analyzed. In the final part of this chapter, the translation strategies of dashes are summarized based on a quantitative analysis. The last chapter summarizes the gains and limitations of this translation practice. |
