From the 1940 s to the 1960 s,American music was almost dominated by serialism. This kind of music overemphasizes the logic and ignores the emotional expression, which couldn't cater for the public's taste. Therefore,American music gradually broke away from serialism and returned to its original style in the 1970 s.While drawing on traditional music, the composers strived to break through the limitations of traditional music and highlight the characteristics of personal style."New-romanticism" has developed.John corigliano is a powerful symbol of it.?Sonata For Violin And Piano?is a representative work of corigliano 's early period. The first performance of this work was acclaimed and it also strated corigliano 's career as a composer. The sonata not only contains the elements of the romantic music in 19 th century, but also has the characteristics of 20th-century music,is a music combination of traditional and modern techniques. In addition, this work contains rich compositional techniques, reflecting the composer 's pluralistic style.Consequently,I choose this work as the object, and analyse it from 4 aspects(Form,Theme,Pitch organization,Meter and rhythm),focusing on a comprehensive analysis of its composition techniques in order to explore profoundly the features of the work and composer 's compositional style.I hope I can add some references about corigliano 's works in China, and I except my research can play a positive role in the study of 20th-century music.
