On The Application Of Camp Discourse In Translation

Camp theory is proposed by an American writer-Susan Sontag.Camp is the homo-phonic sound of “camp” in Chinese,which is consistent with the meaning of“dare to expose” in the heterogeneous discourse of gender.And it further becomes a powerful weapon in criticizing the established gender paradigm.Camp theorists advocate to reveal heterogeneous gender discourse,highlighting the existence of groups marginalized by mainstream gender values.Camp discourse which aims at the presentation of misgendered value implants female characteristics into male discourse.Keith Harvey first introduces the camp theory into translation studies and creates the camp translation theory.In the translation,Harvey advocates to highlight original camp discourse in the target text so as to provide discourse space for the marginalized groups,promoting the cultural diversity of the target language.Nevertheless,in practical translation practice,it is arduous to meet the requirement of fully manifesting camp discourse in translation due to the influence of social,regional and historical factors.Given China's present situation,camp translation strategy needs to conform to mainstream gender values in Chinese society.Consequently,it is essential to maintain resilient posture when camp literature is brought in.The author takes Keith Harvey's camp talk theory and Call Me by Your Name by Andre Aciman as the research objects,meanwhile studying Wu Yanrong's translation of Call Me by Your Name.It is apparently found that the Chinese translation of Call Me by Your Name does not entirely manifest all the camp discourses of source text.It is similarly found that Harvey's requirements of camp translation theory are not fully implemented,exposing the space for tension and theoretical correction.The article demonstrates from the following three aspects.Firstly,this author summarizes the overseas and domestic researches on camp theories.In addition,after the analysis of characteristics and core views of Harvey's camp talk theory,the author further summarizes its contributions and criticism in camp translation.As has been stated,the author takes Wu Yanrong's translation of Call Me by Your Name as a case study to analyze the translation of camp discourses in the source and target text.Secondly,based on Harvey's map of camp translation theory,the author summarizes the camp discourses in the source text and analyzes the translation of camp discourse in Wu Yanrong's translation of Call Me by Your Name.After analyzing Wu Yanrong's translation of Call Me by Your Name,the author finds that these camp discourses such as the use of emphatics,Italian and parody in the translation of Wu Yanrong's translation are preserved.These camp discourses can manifest the presence of the groups in marginal gender values.Meanwhile,in the analysis of Wu's translation of Call Me by Your Name,the visibility and invisibility of camp discourse are simultaneously found.On the one hand,the camp discourses such as emphatics,Italian and paradox are preserved,but on the other hand,sexual topics are omitted or blurred and inversion of gender-specific terms is rewritten.Accordingly,between the visibility and invisibility of camp discourse,Wu's translation of Call Me by Your Name preserves the camp discourses and weakens camp discourses simultaneously,which presents the resilient posture in Wu's translation of Call Me by Your Name.Finally,the author analyzes the factors behind the resilient posture derived from social background,cultural settings and publishing house's objectives.Additionally,the author points out the limitation of Harvey's camp translation theory and maintains the revised suggestions.It is obviously suggested that the camp translation theory should not singly focus on the complete manifestation of marginal gender discourse in the context of China,but should tactically maintain resilient posture,so as to promote the introduction and development of camp literature in different regions.
