Language learning requires a lot of comprehensible input, and reading is an important means of language input.English extracurricular reading is an effective supplement to English learning in class.New National English Curriculum Standard(2017)published by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China requires that high school students should reach the amount of more than 36,000 English words in extracurricular reading when they graduate. In addition,in the English college entrance examination, the exercise of reading comprehension accounts for 40 points and is the largest proportion of English test in the college entrance examination. It is obvious that English reading ability is an important language ability that students should have. This study is to understand the existing problems through a comparative analysis of the current situation of extracurricular English reading in urban and rural high schools in Shaanxi province, and to put forward some suggestions and countermeasures based on relevant theories. This research mainly uses questionnaire survey method, interview method and literature method. This study selected senior two students and different grades of English teachers from four schools in Shaanxi province as samples, and used self-made questionnaires and interview outlines to investigate them.A total of 360 student questionnaires were distributed and 360 were actually recovered.A total of 20 teacher questionnaires were distributed and 20 were actually recovered.Teacher and student questionnaires are consistent with each other. The questionnaire survey in this study mainly involves three parts.Firstly,English teachers and students 'understanding of the importance of extracurricular reading in English.Secondly, teachers and students' choices of reading material sources, time allocation, reading volume and reading strategies in English extracurricular reading.Thirdly, the main problems students have in reading outside English. In addition,in order to gain a deeper understanding of the status quo, this study also interviewed eight teachers and 10 students from four schools. In this study,by using the frequency method in descriptive statistics,SPSS 20.0 data analysis software was used to analyze the basic reading situation of extracurricular English reading in four senior high school students in Shaanxi province. In addition, the independent sample T-test method was used to analyze the extracurricular reading of urban and rural high school students to see whether there are differences and significant differences in extracurricular reading.By analyzing the results of the questionnaires and interviews, the author finds that the similarity of senior students' English extracurricular reading in urban and rural senior high schools of Shaanxi province is that the overall situation of high school students 'extracurricular English reading in urban and rural is consistent with each other and is not optimistic. The main problems are as follows.Firstly, teachers and students' attitude towards extracurricular English reading is not positive.Secondly, the students' reading time and reading amount is seriously insufficient.Thirdly, the main problem for students in reading outside English is that they don't have time to read, and they have many new words in reading.Fourthly,English teachers lack guidance and effective supervision of students' extracurricular reading. The differences in senior students' English extracurricular reading only exist in these aspects. That is to say,the students in key classes hold more positive attitudes towards reading attitudes, reading frequency and reading amount than those in common classes.Based on the actual situation of extracurricular English reading in urban and rural high school students,in this study the author analyzes the causes of the problems and proposes countermeasures.Firstly, teachers and students are supposed to establish positive attitudes towards English extracurricular reading.Secondly, teachers ought to combine English reading with extracurricular reading.Thirdly, teachers should recommend appropriate reading materials to students.Fourthly, teachers should strengthen the guidance and effective supervision of students' extracurricular English reading.
