Humans have a long history of studying memory, and it has been more than a century since the memory becomes a science. However, ordinary people's understanding of memory remains to be limited.Adventures in Memory: The Science and Secrets of Remembering and Forgetting(following referred to as “Adventures in Memory”)is a popular science book about memory. To meet the needs of interested readers, the translator selects part of this book as the material for this practice report.Popular science writing combines science and literature, which can cause specific difficulties in the translation process. Therefore, translation progress in this report is under the basis of Nord's translation-oriented text analysis model(following will be mentioned as“model”).This model can help the translator understand text functions and choose appropriate translation strategy, which is practical to handle complex texts. The model emphasizes the importance of translation brief and text analysis. The latter includes analysis of intratextual and extratextual factors.By comparing and analyzing translation brief and extratextual factors, translators can clarify text functions and determine whether texts are feasible and determine translation strategies accordingly;intratextual factors analysis can provide translators with specific translation guidance during the translation process. In pre-task preparation, the translator makes a comparison and analysis of translation brief and extratextual factors in determining that the main translation functions of the source text(ST)and the translation strategy. In the part of case analysis, through the examples of the analysis of intratextual factors, such as subject matter, content, presupposition, lexis, and sentence structure, the importance of intratextual factors analysis in translation progress is presented.Applying the model to the translation provides the translator with a way to learn and standardize translation thinking. In this process, the translator becomes aware of the importance of cultural background and related information,as well as the importance of the mastery of the source and target language(SL and TL).Hopefully, this translation process can provide experience and inspiration for future ones.
