A Report On The Translation Of Mining Industry Text From The Perspective Of Catford's Translation Shifts Theory

In recent years,with the rapid development of the economy,China's demand for all kinds of energy has increased sharply.However,China's currently proven reserves of bauxite resources are not large and the resources are difficult to regenerate.Therefore,the active development of overseas bauxite resources is of great significance to the long-term sound development of Chinese industry,and the translation studies of bauxite mining projects are of great practical significance.Mining industry text is a typical text of science and technology.The language style is objective and serious,focusing on explaining the mining process and objective facts.In order to improve the readability of the target text and meet the needs of customers,the translator selects the translation shifts theory proposed by the famous linguist John C.Catford as the theoretical guidance to conduct the translation practice of mining industry text.Catford's translation shifts theory,mainly including two aspects of level shifts and category shifts,provides a strong theoretical support for the analysis of mining industry text.In chapter four,the translator combines Catford's translation shifts theory with his own translation practice,starts from the vocabulary and sentence level,the translator analyzes a large number of examples to further explore the translation process.It includes the shifts of plural form of nouns and tenses and aspect under the guidance of level shifts;the shifts between active and passive voice,positive and negative expressions as well as long and short sentences under the guidance of category shifts.By completing this translation task and writing the translation practice report,the author finds that Catford' s translation shifts theory has important guiding significance for the Chinese translation of mining industry texts.By applying level shifts and category shifts,long and difficult sentences,nominalized structures and passive voice in English are shifted into short sentences and active voice in Chinese,which makes the translation smoother and more natural,conforms to Chinese expression habits,and greatly improves the readability of the target text.
