Digital media technology has been developing rapidly with the popularization of computer animation and visual reality technology since computer technology emerged in 1960 s and network technology and digital communication technology flourished.Digital media technology is changing how art is made revolutionarily.By merging technology with art,digital media art fully developed.As we applied digital media technology to the practices of the art of theatre,the forms of traditional theatre has been reshaped.With digital image,virtual reality(VR),augmented reality(AR),mixed reality(MR)and AI technology(AI)and other latest technology,theatre is not simply about the application of traditional lighting,scenery,property,installation,digital screen or holographic net screen anymore,which allows artists to think differently from the perspective of digital media technology.We are trying applying cross-media technology to drama,theatre,opera,dance drama,musical and even symphony,allowing contemporary theatre to meet the digitalized future.What we need to explore is: how could we bring technology into theatre and how could we transform technology into art? From the East to the West,is a cross-media theatre created by different composers and multi-media artists in this era of globlization,produced by Shanghai Conservatory of Musicand and sponsored by China National Arts Fund.It embraces different cultures and repesnsts cultural confifence and international vision,demonstrating how artists reflect on the present,the history and the future.In this article,illustrated by the example of From the East to the West,we will talk about the application of digital media art in digital theatre,exploring technology and the transformation of the art theatre.
