By analyzing and exploring the Rhythm and Blues music style in the two songs from musical Dream Girls,this dissertation expounds the musical characteristics and sound shaping of its style in details.Since the 1940 s,a kind of old folk song of black Americans has developed the Rhythm and Blues(Rhythm and Blues abbreviated as “R&B”)until contemporary period through continuous integration and absorption.It not only has been popular in the field of pop music for more than eighty years,but also has shown great strength in worldwide musical stages.Dream Girls is highly integrated the Rhythm and Blues into the singing,dancing,and acting of the musical.It is an exemplary play of the combination of Rhythm and Blues style into musicals and a milestone in the history of American Broadway musicals.This dissertation contains three chapters.Chapter I is the music style of Rhythm and Blues,which briefly introduces the outline and development of R&B and the singing characteristics.The second chapter is the combination of Rhythm and Blues with Broadway.It summarizes the general history of the combination of R&B style with musicals and the significance and influence of classical plays.Chapter III explains the singing treatments of the two songs from the musical Dream Girls and introduces the general scenarios and the relationship between the characters.It sums up the sound training while musicians singing this play By analyzing the parts of two songs I'm Changing and One Night Only,this chapter extracts the musical characteristics of Rhythm and Blues style.Finding out the problems and solutions when musicians singing these kind of songs.The conclusion of this dissertation is drawn by the author's own experiences exploring the ways of shaping the characters in the musical.
