As a unique artistic style,self-portrait is an important part of western art history,which has explored its own territory in the world of art.Since the Renaissance,the role and social status of artists are constantly changing,and self-portraits have become an important way for them to explore their personal state of mind and examine their identity as human beings and artists.It is also a true portrayal of the artist and an expression of inner emotions in a certain period of time,which usually has a richer connotation.The emerging,developing and changing of self-portrait ties closely to the concept of the art and the artist shaped in that period as well as the transition of the artists' social and cultural status.Self-portrait can be said to be the artists' expression on their own living situation,artistic ideas and artistic talent,which is the artist 's deep and keen awareness of their existence.Having been attracted by how self-portrait spreads the real inner world of the artist,displays his deeper self and exhibits his spirit,I take self-portrait as the main theme of my essay.The essay,trying methods such as reference research,comparison survey and case study,firstly focuses on the brief history of western portrait development and its necessary emerging,states the context of the self-portrait,and then analyzes the self-portrait types in early Renaissance,the occurrence and development of independent self-portrait as well as the cultural significance of self-portraits,and then the self-portraits growing freely,along with the further study on the typical artists,and comes to a conclusion on the presentation way of the self-portrait and the background of its occurrence.It also focuses on the characteristics of self-portraits in the Western Renaissance and sorts out the modes of presentation of self-portraits of each typical period as well as its the background reasons.
