A Project Report On The Translation Of Unwell:What Makes A Disease A Disease

All mankind must face illness,the list of which may change in different times.With the development of human cognition and medicine,some illnesses have disappeared in the list but meanwhile,new ones come up.Unwell: What makes a disease a disease,a medical science book,discusses how diseases are named,the names' history and related cultural and social factors,exploring the influences of diseases' names.The book was selected for this translation project after I identified that it had no Chinese version.Covering the first section of the book,this report aims to enhance people's understanding of illnesses and look at both ourselves and others in a different way.The project report was consisted of four parts: introduction of the project,description of the project,case study and conclusion.In this translation practice,difficulties of words translation can be found in the following aspects: there are many terminologies,common nouns have special meanings in different contexts or contain the cultural background of the source language.In terms of sentences,there are many passive sentences,long and difficult sentences in the source language,which are different from Chinese.Under the guidance of Nord's complete translation theories,the text analysis mode was used to analyze the overall structure,key words,language features,etc.During the translation process,translation strategies such as literal translation,free translation,annotation,and sentences reorganization were used to solve these problems,making the purpose and the meaning of the source text could be conveyed to readers of the target text.Nevertheless,there are still some problems to be solved in this translation practice.First,whether the literal translation method is proper for terms without authoritative translation;Second,for the translation of some terms,if one target text is more familiar to the audience and be chose as the translation,will it make another target text less familiar with the audience? Thirdly,how to deal with humor in translation needs further discussion.
