The combination of Western oil painting and the traditional freehand brushwork of Chinese painting produces the Chinese freehand oil painting.Freehand oil painting is the product of nationalization of oil painting,whose formation is inseparable from the inheritance and reference of the national philosophy and painting aesthetics.In freehand ink painting,black and white,as the main elements,occupy the absolute position of the picture.They are far different from it in Western painting,which is a kind of existence beyond the meaning of chromatics.Influenced by Taoist yin-yang theory,black and white elements break away from the shackles of objective surface color,directly pursue the connotation,and reflect the high unity of image and mood,which is an all-inclusive spiritual state.One may well say that black and white can be described as the great beauty,the philosophical color that contains all possibilities.The ingenious technique of “black and white contrast” and the creative thought of pursuing aesthetic charm in ink painting have profound enlightenment on the creation of freehand oil painting and there are relevant references in many masterpieces of freehand oil painters.Taking the black and white elements of ink painting as the main cut-in point,this paper will focus on the reference of Chinese freehand oil painting to its black and white elements.This paper consists of three parts: Introduction,Main Body and Conclusion.Introduction is principally concerning the source of the subject,the purpose and significance of the research.The main body of the paper is analyzed from five chapters.The Chapter One is an overview of Chinese freehand oil painting.The Chapter Two expounds and analyzes the related concepts of black and white elements and ink painting.The Chapter Three extends the core content of the paper,that is,the reference of freehand oil painting to the black and white elements of ink painting.This section enumerates the works of famous freehand oil painting artists and ancient classic ink paintings for comparison and focuses on the three aspects of freehand oil painting's reference to black and white elements of ink painting in image composition,brush and ink using and expression of space and artistic conception.The Chapter Four involves the case study of the contemporary masters in the field of freehand oil painting,analyzes and interprets their reference to black and white elements of ink painting.Finally,it discusses the artistic value andcontemporary significance of freehand oil painting drawing on black and white elements of ink painting.The Conclusion part is about the summary of the research,the conclusion and the comprehension.Based on the reference and research of Chinese freehand oil painting on black and white elements in ink painting,this paper analyzes and summarizes the phenomenon,way,characteristics and significance of freehand oil painting on the use of black and white elements in ink painting via multi-views.Casually or attentively and to a greater or lesser extent,a revelation of conscious choice to black-and-white freehand brushwork is reflected on the freehand oil painters in China.Such conscious reference originates from the powerful and prosperous Chinese culture and requires freehand oil painters to take the nationalization of oil painting as their duty,uphold the spirit of freehand brushwork,absorb the broad and profound black and white aesthetics in ink painting,carry forward the tradition,and actively explore the Chinese way of oil painting.Meanwhile,different painters share different comprehensions to the black and white elements of ink painting and the spirit of freehand brushwork,but all of these,eventually,have merged into a diversified and prosperous picture of Chinese freehand oil painting.Precisely speaking,Chinese freehand oil painting is still at the stage of development,not to the stage of full maturity,thus significant scope to grow remains.Therefore,by constantly drawing on and absorbing the essence of traditional culture,based on the local and focusing on the development of oil painting art in the contemporary world,being adept in integrating the nutrients of Western oil painting art,and continuously reflecting and summarizing in its development,Chinese freehand oil painting can be systematically improved and enriched,and form a new artistic style endowed with oriental charm,which will be displayed in the global art stage.
