The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017)stipulates senior high school students should accomplish at least 300,000 words of extracurricular reading,thus traditional reading materials based on question types of the College Entrance Examination cannot meet students' reading needs.The improvement of students' English reading capacity plays an essential role in solving current difficulties,especially,to make literature reading as the core of advancing students' reading ability,it helps students to improve on both language level and mind level.As a subject of English major,the Classic English Literature Reading has been widely taught in college while it is still on the stage of attempt in senior high schools.Literature reading has three major functions: To expand life experience and comprehend social common sense,as the cognitive function;To stimulate aesthetic taste and cultivate aesthetic ability,as the aesthetic function;To teach someone how to get along with people and how to live with the world,as the educational function.Meanwhile,literature reading meets two requirements of new curriculum standard: Instrumentality and humanity.The instrumentality can be embodied in its lively language and deep thoughts.It covers every layer of daily life that gives students ideal language materials.The humanity can be embodied in its inner power.It arms students with all the rich cultural connotations,advanced thoughts and great souls.Hence,if literature reading can be efficiently applied in English learning,the stubborn problems of current English teaching situation may be broken through in a way.In this thesis,the author combines internship experience with theory learning,tries to explore senior high school students' mental development and learning laws based on cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics,selects suitable classic English literature materials and designs proper teaching plans which aim at 86 students in Wuhan W Senior High School.Students' feedbacks will be collected and analyzed by means of classroom observation method and questionnaire method after literature reading implementation.This research indicates that applying classic English literature as extensive reading materials in senior high school English classroom can greatly stimulate students' reading interest,motivate students' reading enthusiasm,improve students' reading habits and cultivate their lifelong learning concept on long-term reading plan;During the process of this research,English literature reading expands students' vocabulary and enriches their knowledge of British and American cultures.By means of setting various open discussion tasks in teaching,students are encouraged to express their unique viewpoints bravely in public and debate with partners freely,thus their critical thinking abilities can be awakened and cultivated.Therefore,students can not only improve their English language abilities,but also advance their humanistic qualities.This research is an attempt to show the validity and advantage of applying English literature reading teaching in senior high school.It can positively achieve a greater performance for long-term promotion.
