| Autobiography provides a glimpse of the history and culture of a specific country, hence,it plays an important role in cultural communication. However, considering differences between Chinese and English in language and culture, the explicitation means are inevitable to be used during translation to convey the meaning clearly. Therefore, based on the translation practice of a text, this thesis discusses the realization of explicitation means in autobiography translation. The SL text is New Culture and Western Culture,an autobiography written by Chinese writer Jiang Menglin, which touches upon the history of China from 1841 to 1942.With this autobiography as a case study, this thesis researches on previous studies on explicitation hypothesis and means, selects some typical examples to analyze the guidance offered by explicitation means in translation,as well as how the theory is employed to remove the obstacles.During translation, the difficulties lie in three aspects, lexical level, syntactic level, and textual level. On the basis of previous studies, several means are selected and classified into these three categories. On lexical level, specification, addition, adding annotation and connotation explicitation are applied;on the syntactic level, adding conjunction and reorganization are used, while on the textual level, the translator adopted restructuring and supplementation.By using these methods, the meaning of expressions tinted with historical and cultural colors is conveyed clearly and explicitly,as well as showing the logic within and between sentences. With a comprehensive analysis of means and an in-depth case analysis, this thesis concludes that explicitation means play a constructive role in autobiography translation, and hence both the literal meaning and cultural implication of the text can be well conveyed to foreign readers. However, there remain some limits to be improved in the future, for instance, choosing more translation texts to expand the research scope. |
