Yu Qiuyu is a renowned contemporary Chinese writer and literary figure with an enormous readership. In Yu's work Trips in China:Following Yu Qiuyu's Footsteps,he associates abundant historical information and anecdotal cultural stories with the relics and sceneries he came across during his trips.Under the backdrop of Chinese culture's"Going Global",the Chinese-English translation of this work is significant to promoting Chinese history of various dynasties and cultures of ethnic minorities.During the translation, the author came across multiple challenges including culture-specific items. After comparing the translation strategies put forward by foreign and domestic scholars, the author adopts the taxonomy proposed by Aixela and makes modification and addition according to the characteristics of Chinese-English translation. The report is based on the sample sentences collected from the translation practice and presents it from the perspective of culture-specific items. The translator applied nine of the eleven translation strategies provided by Aixela in an ascending degree of intercultural manipulation, namely orthographic adaptation(transliteration),linguistic translation, extratextual gloss, intratextual gloss, synonymy, limited universalization, absolute universalization, naturalization, and deletion. Two additional strategies are applied, namely transliteration by a third language and compensation for errors.According to statistical results, conservation strategies are more frequently used than substitution strategies.Generally speaking,Aixela's translation strategies for culture-specific items are suitable for the Chinese-English translation practice of this literary text on history and culture.
