Research On Wuzhou Yao

Wuzhou Yao,located in Jinhua and Quzhou,Zhejiang Province.It is a local kiln in Wuzhou area.The firing history of Wuzhou Yao is very long.It has continued from the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty.It has a large number of kiln sites and a rich variety of porcelain.However,the study of Wuzhou Yao by the academic circles is limited to the archaeological excavation and discussion of the single kiln,rarely carries on the comprehensive study.Given that,this paper summarizes the published kiln and burial materials of Wuzhou Yao in Jinhua,Quzhou and part of Jiangxi,and makes use of historical philology,historical geography and archaeological typology to discuss the archaeological discovery of Wuzhou Yao,the typical characteristics of Wuzhou Yao’s porcelain and the hot issues of Wuzhou Yao.The introduction explores the geographic location,topography in the Wuzhou area and the date range of the Wuzhou Yao.Wuzhou Yao are distributed in Jinhua and Quzhou,which are located in the Jinqu Basin.The Jinqu Basin is hilly,with rivers and red-pink sandstone soils,an important source of porcelain clay in Wuzhou porcelain.Wuzhou Yao was created in the Eastern Han Dynasty and continued to the Yuan Dynasty,with a long span of time and a complete sequence of development.The first chapter reviews the history of the study of porcelain in the Wuzhou Yao,dividing it into four stages according to the period of archaeological excavation and research.The first stage is before the 1950 s,when there was no archaeological material of Wuzhou Yao,and the attention of the academic circles to Wuzhou Yao only remained on the sporadic documentary records;Chen Wanli took the lead in conducting field investigation of Wuzhou Yao and formed the investigation records.The second stage is from the 1950 s to the 1970 s,during which the archaeological materials of Wuzhou Yao increased,and the academic community formed a preliminary understanding of Wuzhou Yao.The third stage was from the 1980 s to the end of the twentieth century,during which the excavation materials of Wuzhou Yao were constantly increased,and the academic circles’ knowledge of Wuzhou Yao was constantly deepened,and comprehensive treatises on the study of Wuzhou Yao appeared;in addition,the exploration of thematic issues such as make-up clay and emulsion glaze porcelain was also gradually launched.The fourth stage is from the twentieth century onwards,the archaeological excavation of Wuzhou Yao in this period is still going on,and Wuzhou Yao kilns has been found outside Zhejiang Province;the folk research force of Wuzhou Yao is very strong,the scholar’s research of Wuzhou Yao concentrates on the exploration of artistry and firing process.The second chapter examines the archaeological discovery of the Wuzhou Yao,which is mainly divided into two parts: the kiln sites and the burials.According to the kiln site’s distribution location and each county and city’s geographical characteristics,will wuzhou Yao’s distribution is divided into five major areas,namely: Jinhua and lanxi;Dongyang and Yiwu;Wuyi and Yongkang;Quzhou(including Jiangshan,Longyou);Yushan.Jinhua and Lanxi have Tiedian Yao,Xiangxi Yao,Songshan Yao,etc.;Yiwu and Dongyang have Geshan Yao,Xiangtangshan Yao,etc.;Wuyi and Yongkang have Guanghu Yao,Chen Datangkeng Yao,Shuidui Yao,Gaotashan Yao,etc.;Quzhou has Baiyang mound Yao,Fangtan Yao,etc.;Yushan has Yushan Dokou Yao.Wuzhou Yao porcelain burials were found in Jinhua Wucheng,Lanxi,Yiwu,Yongkang,Dongyang,Wuyi County,Quzhou City and Jiangshan and Longyou counties under Quzhou City,and the period from the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty covered almost the entire production period of Wuzhou Yao.The third chapter mainly discusses the typical characteristics of Wuzhou Yao porcelain, which is specifically divided into three aspects,such as the stylistic characteristics of Wuzhou Yao porcelain,the ornamentation of Wuzhou Yao porcelain and the kiln technology of Wuzhou Yao.The porcelain moulding aspect,according to the moulding and use of the artifacts,divides the porcelain of Wuzhou Yao into three categories of living utensils,civil room utensils,bright ware.Different periods,Wuzhou Yao common ware shape is constantly changing,East Han Dynasty to Three Kingdoms,ware is more,Tang Dynasty,daily life appliances is more.Decorations of Wuzhou Yao′s porcelain has mesh design,bow string pattern,wave pattern,lotus flower,treepeony,interlocking flower,chrysanthemum.Wuzhou Yao’s ceramic industry is developed,including dragon kiln,dome kiln,kiln furniture including firing utensils,sagger,etc.The fourth chapter mainly discusses three hot issues,namely: the relationship between Wuzhou Yao’s flambe glazed porcelain and the flambe glazed porcelain of Xin’an shipwrecked;the research of Wuzhou Yao’s make-up clay;Wuzhou Yao’s brown porcelain and porcelain with brown spots.The concluding part reviews the archaeological discovery of Wuzhou Yao,the typical characteristics of Wuzhou Yao’s porcelain,and the related problems of Wuzhou Yao’s research,so as to have a comprehensive understanding of Wuzhou Yao and Wuzhou Yao’s porcelain.
