In this translation practice,chapters one and two from Outdoor Recreation and the Urban Environment are selected as the original text for the translation practice.Outdoor Recreation and the Urban Environment is a popular science book published by Oxford University Press,aiming at popularizing the knowledge of the impact of human outdoor recreation activities on the urban environment.With the development of technology and the richness of material resources,people find more ways to enrich their outdoor recreation.There is an inseparable connection between human outdoor recreation activities and urban environment,on which the relevant researches have been done and these researches are of great significance to the sustainable development of human society.As a carrier of relevant research results,the book Outdoor Recreation and the Urban Environment can popularize relevant knowledge,and thus the translation of this book is also crucial.This report applies Catford's translation shifts theory to present the characteristics of popular science texts,in which the part-of-speech shifts is paid great attention to.Catford first put forward the “translation shifts theory” in which translation shift was divided into level shifts and category shifts,aiming to achieve equivalence in meaning between source text and target text.(Catford,1965: 80)The essence of translation is revealed in the shifts of linguistic forms between source text and target text.The purpose of this report is to improve the translation quality with the help of Catford's translation shifts theory.This report consists of five chapters.The first chapter discusses the characteristics of popular science works and the source text Outdoor Recreation and the Urban Environment;the history and current situation of translation of popular science works in China;the significance of this translation practice.The second chapter introduces the translation process.The third chapter provides the theoretical framework with detailed introduction to the theoretical viewpoints revealed in Catford's translation shifts theory.The fourth chapter is the case study which explores the strategies of part-of-speech shifts in the translation of popular science works from the perspectiveof class shifts and gives specific examples of multiple types of part-of-speech shifts,such as the shifts of nouns,adjectives,adverbs and verbs.The fifth chapter summarizes the lessons drawn from the translation practice and the existing deficiencies to be solved.
