This report is based on the first two chapters of World Englishes and Culture Wars.As a typical academic work, this book is written by Braj B.Kachru,a professor of linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,who initiated and dedicated to the study of World Englishes throughout his whole life. The writer investigates the development of English varieties and the ensuing culture wars around the world. In the process of translation, the author employs various translation techniques to solve translation problems encountered and then illustrates how these knotty points are worked out by virtue of some representative cases. The author adopts the Skopos Theory as theoretical support after a careful analysis of linguistic features and writing style of the source text.Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory, the author attempts to solve difficulties and obstacles that arise in the translation work by means of different translation methods. As for proper nouns and polysemous words, the translator looks up the accurate meaning in professional dictionary of linguistics or deduces the meaning according to a certain context in order to restore the rigorous charm of the original language. In the case of adjective and noun clauses, the translator uses various methods, like omission, amplification, splitting,to cater to the expression habits of target readers. In terms of discourse translation, the translator analyzes the difference of cohesion between English and Chinese and then employs targeted translation strategies and methods to produce a clear and coherent text. From this translation practice, the author not only gains extensive linguistic knowledge on World Englishes, but also makes full use of this opportunity to hone translation skills.Albeit with some defects, the translation report offers examples and cases in detail, which, the author believes, can bring inspirations to the study of World Englishes.
