English Translation Of Character Depiction In Yuan Ji On The Basis Of Skopos Theory

The short story Parinirvana is selected as the translation project,which tells a moving story between a handicapped beggar and a girl,and eventually,the story reveals the true meaning of happiness in the world.This short story belongs to literary works,with intense descriptions of characters and simple and plain contents.The translator is faced with two main difficulties.One is the translation of professional vocabulary,like the expressions of Buddhist and traditional Chinese vocabularies.And the other is the difficulty in the sentence translation due to the different ways of thinking of English and Chinese.Some sentences need to be translated flexibly by the translator.This translation report analysis holds that literary works focus on the effective communication of information and meanings.The Skopos Theory emphasizes purposiveness of translation while paying great attention to the receptivity of target readers.Under the guidance of the three principles of Skopos Theory,the translator refers to many books and articles,and analyzes the the characteristics of literature translation,the typical translation techniques and the different expressions between English and Chinese.Literal translation,free translation and addition are selected as the main translation techniques to achieve the purpose of information transmission,and thus reducing difficulties and conforming to the Chinese way of expressions.
