This is a translation report based on the translation practice, excerpts from Family,Story and Identity, the non-fictional work by Australian writer Dr.Senem Mallman.Being told by immigrant women, the stories chosen for translation, have heterogeneous cultural characteristics.Translation here is a kind of intercultural communication activity, and heterogeneous cultural characteristics add difficulty and challenges to this activity. This translation report is divided into four parts. The first chapter is the translation task description, including an introduction to the content of the book and task significance. The second chapter is the translation task process description, including translation preparation, translation process and post-translation matters. The third chapter is the focus of this report, which analyzes several difficult problems in the process of translation from lexical level, syntactic level and textual level, such as non-English language, taboo languages, proper nouns,new-coined words, translation of texts of different genres under the guidance of Newmark's theory of communicative translation and semantic translation. For the translation of non-English languages, the methods of transliteration and zero translation are proposed for the translation of words and sentences respectively;for the translation of taboos and euphemisms, taking into account the acceptance of the target language readers and the style of the target language, communicative translation is adopted;for the translation of proper nouns, the translator adopts the strategy of combining communicative translation with semantic translation to increase the readability of the translation and make it faithful to the source text. For the translation of coined words and long sentences,on the basis of fully understanding the source text, the translator mainly adopts communicative translation to make the translation more fluent;for different genres of the original text, such as stories, academic texts and oral accounts, for different purposes, the translator also adopts communicative translation strategy to maintain the style of the source text while increasing the readability of the target text. The fourth chapter summarizes the practical experience and lessons of translation, proposing that in the process of translation,cross-cultural awareness is a must for translators. In addition, the translator must correctly identify the text value of the source text in order to retain the language style and the underlying meaning of the source text in translation.
