This project is based on the translation of the thirteenth chapter from The Sacred Willow: Four Generations in the Life of a Vietnamese Family and the critical commentary which contains translation difficulties and case studies.Semantic translation and communicative translation,as the important part of Peter Newmark's translation theory,is the guiding principle of this translation practice. It can be drawn from Newmark's Approaches to Translation that semantic translation is conductive to reappearing the original context meaning, while communicative translation helps to make the translation idiomatic and readable. This project consists of two parts.Part one presents the original English text and its translated Chinese text.Part two is the critical commentary which is divided into four parts.Under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation, this project is intended to analyze and explain how to improve the readability of the translated text by using certain strategies with the translated text meaning in line with the the original context meaning. The conclusion is that by complementing one another, there is no absolute split between semantic translation and communicative translation, and the five strategies applied to this translation all fully embody semantic translation and communicative translation. Therefore, only by combining semantic translation and communicative translation can we get the best translation.
