Ethnic cognition is the premise and basis of ethnic identity.As a carrier of ethnic culture,language plays an important role in ethnic cognition,inheritance and development.China is a multi-ethnic,multilingual,and multi-dialect population country.According to statistics from Mr.Zhou Youguang,there are more han 80 languages and regional dialects of 56 ethnic groups in China that cannot communicate with each other.Many overseas Chinese,especially Indonesia,the largest gathering place of Chinese,use Chinese dialects.The influence of different Chinese dialects on ethnic knowledge is an important research topic in sociolinguistics,ethnic history,and social psychology.On the basis of combing related research on ethnic cognition or identity,this article further investigates the relationship between dialects and ethnic cognition.First,the group-referenced R / K paradigm is used to investigate ethnic cognition of domestic Han groups in different dialects.Participants had Cantonese,Hakka or Minnan dialect experience,showing a significant group reference effect on their own ethnic group;compared with unrelated ethnic groups,the Hakka dialect group showed a higher group reference effect on the northern dialect group(Henanese).Then,a questionnaire survey was used to examine the attitudes and ethnic knowledge of Chinese students studying in Indonesia with different dialect experiences.The results show that(1)different dialect proficiency affects ethnic cognition.Chinese Indonesian students with high dialect proficiency know their own ethnic group better,and vice versa.That is to say,the dialect level is positively related to ethnic cognition.(2)The frequency of dialect use affects ethnic cognition.Chinese Indonesian students who often use dialects to speak have a better understanding of their ethnic group,and vice versa.(3)The language attitude of dialects influences their ethnic cognition.International students with good language attitudes have the highest awareness and acceptance of ethnic culture,and they strongly identify with their Chinese identity psychologically.Otherwise it is worse.(4)The sooner or later dialect acquisition time affects ethnic cognition.The sooner you learn the ancestral dialect,the better your understanding of the ethnic group.(5)The influence of different dialect features on ethnic cognition of overseas Chinese students.The ethnic cognition of Indonesian students with Hakka dialect background is better than that of overseas students with Minnan dialect and Chaoshan dialect background.Finally,the corresponding suggestions are put forward based on the previous research content and results.
