With the friendly relations between China and Indonesia, especially in Indonesia over the past 10 years, the number of people learning Chinese is increasing. Presently, more and more achievements on the learning of Chinese phonetics of Indonesia's Chinese students are made in the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, however, few researches have been conducted on non-Chinese Indonesian difficulties in learning Chinese phonetic as well as other aspects of Chinese learning. Indonesia's Chinese teachers are facing varying problems on teaching non-Chinese students, and one of them is regarding the Chinese phonetics. The problem is becoming increasingly significant with the increase of Indonesia's non-Chinese learners. This thesis summarizes the main problems and difficulties of Indonesian students in learning the phonetics of Chinese Mandarin by observing Indonesia's non-Chinese students' learning process of Mandarin. Through investigation into Indonesia's non-Chinese students' learning of Chinese phonetics, this thesis aims to gain more insight into their detailed difficulties in learning Chinese consonants, vowels, tones and changes of tune, as well as analysis of the reasons for the difficulties. This study is expected to be helpful to Indonesia's non-Chinese students' learning of Chinese phonetics.
