With the unceasing development of globalization and multi-media technology, especially the arrival of digital age, signs of image and sound play an increasingly important role in cultural communication. Thus, means of meaning generation get innovated.Means of culture communication and transmission tend to be multivariate from only verbal transmission.Roman Jakobson's tripartite division of translation: intralingual translation, interlingual translation and intersemiotic translation, sees translation process on the semiotic level, which broadens the scope of translation study. The Old Man and the Sea,as a masterwork of Ernest Hemingway, has drawn the attention of Chinese scholars and translators, which has widespread influence in China and the world.Based on Jakobson's theory,it is interlingual translation to translate the original text into Chinese;it is intersemiotic translation to translate the original text into film and animation, using audio-visual signs to explain verbal signs. Both interlingual and intersemiotic translation furtherly dig out the canonicity of this English text, promoting the further transmission of this masterpiece through the multimode narrative in China and the world. This research reviews the status quo of interlingual translation study of this novella in China and intersemiotic translation study in the world. On the aspects of interlingual translation and intersemiotic translation, this thesis examines both of the superiority and limitations of verbal language and audio-visual language. This research selected Eileen Chang's,Yu Guangzhong's and Sun Zhili's Chinese versions as examples to take an analysis on the interlingual translation process with the help of corpus-based method. It analyzes the word using frequency and Bei-sentence using,in purpose of exploring the translation strategies and styles of different translators. And it selects the existing film and animation version for multilevel analysis from the perspectives of translation strategies, manipulation of direct information and effect of audio-visual language devices. Thus,it can provide suggestions for the multimode transmission of classic literary works in today's world. The research concludes that in the interlingual translation process, different versions present various translation artistic styles through the different word using frequency and sentence structure, after the analysis of the original text and different version. In the intersemiotic translation process, two film versions and one animation version respectively adopt different translation strategies. They adjust the plots, lines of characters and narrative structures in different ways and reproduce the characters and environment with film and animation creation devices as well as the score design, realizing the rebirth of this classic literary work in audio-visual signs with different styles.
