From the beginning of English teaching, teachers have been aware of this significance. In order to improve the efficiency of reading class, teachers often take the leading position during the process of teaching. This kind of teaching enables students to master vocabulary and grammar knowledge as much as possible. However, the shortcoming of traditional English teaching is also highlighted.Students only accept the information delivered by teachers and memorize vocabulary and grammar points passively, which cannot foster students' initiative consciousness and innovative awareness. As a result, students' self-consciousness and interest in English learning decreases.Projected-based Learning(PBL)approach is an advanced method based on cooperative learning.Under the appropriate guidance of teachers, the students' learning autonomy will increase through cooperation. The project required by the topic will be completed in the form of group collaboration. The students need to negotiate with their teammates to make a thorough plan to ensure the accomplishment of final project.Through this teaching model, the teaching pattern becomes student-centered instead of teacher-centered,allowing the students to increase their learning autonomy and creativity in the classroom. It also changes the style that students get information from passively accepting to taking the initiative. At the end of class, students are required to show their projects in front of the class. It is also a way to improve their language expression ability.Although this teaching approach has been accepted and applied in recent years at home and abroad, the application of this teaching method in China is still to be developed. In order to explore the practical application of PBL in high school English reading class, this thesis aims to address the following three problems:1)How does PBL effect students' reading ability?2)How does PBL effect students' reading interest and their attitudes towards reading?3)How do teachers and students apply Project-based Learning approach to improve English reading ability and learning interests? In this study,80 subjects were selected from two parallel classes in grade 2 of a senior high school. The study was carried out for 12 weeks. Before the experiment, the pre-test was conducted to ensure that there was no significant difference on English reading ability of the two classes. And then the two classes were selected as experimental class and control class randomly. In addition, the questionnaire and interview were given to the students to understand their reading interests and learning attitudes.During the experiment, the experimental class adopted Projected-based Learning(PBL)approach and the control class still adopted traditional teaching method. The instruments were test, questionnaire and interview. After the experiment, the instruments were conducted. All the data were collected in the end.The data were analyzed by SPSS 25.0 to evaluate the impact of PBL on reading ability and learning attitudes. The results can be concluded as follows:(1)By adopting Projected-based Learning approach, the efficiency of reading class and students' reading ability can be improved.(2)By adopting Projected-based Learning approach,it can also change students' attitude towards reading and cultivate their learning autonomy,so as to stimulate their interest of English learning and change their learning attitudes.(3)Detailed implementing procedures can be followed to improve students' English ability and learning interest.Firstly,as for different topics, teachers and students should select the most appropriate one.For examples,it is better to select a speech or a magazine if the topic is Life and Emotion;when it comes to Literature and Art,the better choice is drama play. The table that the author summary can be a reference for teachers and students to make a choice.Secondly, for detailed implementing steps, the ‘Seven Steps' Tutorial Process of PBL can be followed. The author hopes that this research can bring some further thoughts to educators on improving students' learning efficiency, increasing their reading ability and stimulating their learning interests as much as possible.
