Chinese Interpersonal-function Vocabulary In News On China-U.S. Trade War From People's Daily

This paper does researches on diachronic analysis of Chinese interpersonal-function vocabulary in news on “China-US Trade War” from People's Daily and contrastive analysis of Chinese-English interpersonal-function vocabulary in news on “China-US Trade War” from People's Daily and the New York Times.Both of them are based on the criterion(or framework)modified from previous related studies.And this paper at last presents a list of Chinese interpersonal-function vocabulary and a list of Chinese-English interpersonal-function vocabulary.The main conclusions drawn from the contrastive analysis of two-phase Chinese vocabulary from People's Daily are as follow:(1)In terms of word frequency,lexical density of interpersonalfunction vocabulary in both phases is about 15%,with that of the second phase 11.67% higher than the first phase;interpersonal-function vocabulary in both phases is in high distribution in dimensions of “[ATTITUDE]” and “[TONE]”,low distribution in dimensions of “[DIS-/APPOVING]” and “[GRADUATION]”;words(Chinese “ci”)in both phases are high in word frequency and word frequency dispersion while idioms(Chinese “yu”)low in word frequency and word frequency dispersion.(2)In terms of word types,shared word types of two phases account for the majority of vocabulary while distinctive word tpyes in phase one double that of phase two;words types in two phases are in similar.(3)In terms of word functions,“[+DIS-/APPOVING]” and “[+ATTITUDE]” vocabulary with strong interpersonal meaning and descriptive meaning can be generally used alone while “[+TONE]” and “[+GRADUATION] ” vocabulary with strong interpersonal meaning can not.(4)In terms of the relatiobship between interpersonal purpose and vocabulary,fluctuation in both standpoint in two phases and information sources will affect the frequency of usage of “[+DIS-/APPOVING]” and “[+ATTITUDE]” vocabulary.The main conclusions drawn from the contrastive analysis of Chinese-English interpersonal-function vocabulary are as follow:(1)“[+TONE]” and “[+GRADUATION]” share similar distribution while “[+DIS-/APPOVING]” and “[+ATTITUDE]” vocabulary share quite different distribution;(2)Chinese modal particle(“yu qi zhu ci”)is unique and Chinese “cheng yu”(part of the idioms)and some Chinese modal adverb(“yu qi fu ci”)can find no identical forms in English;(3)Chinese news fundamentally use “[+DIS-/APPOVING]” and “[+ATTITUDE]” vocabulary to display a clear and strong stance while English news mostly use “[+ATTITUDE]” and “[+TONE]” vocabulary to show the stance that can be interptreted differently from various viewpoints.
