India is a great power in the South Asia.lt is also an important member of the multilateral platforms such as the WTO,the G20,the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the BRICS,and the Basic Four countries.India is an important neighboring country to China, and they share extensive common interests in promoting world peace,muti-polarization development, safeguarding border security, economic cooperation and trade, opposing trade protectionism. Therefore,India gained more and more attentions from the international community,China included. As the foundation of India ’ s diplomatic strategy, the non-aligned policy has influenced the diplomatic practice of India for a long time since Nehru took office.Today,it still remains the basic principle of India’s foreign policy. The analysis of India’s diplomatic strategies and policies not only can help us to understand India’s diplomatic environment during Cold War period, but also can grasp the trend of Indian diplomacy, especially, can provide China with feasible basis for the diplomatic strategies. This thesis mainly analyses the non-aligned policy of Nehru from the aspects of its implications and causes, obstruction and effects. The implication of India’s non-aligned policy recognition is diverse and it has deep social, historical and cultural background.Meanwhile,by carrying out non-aligned policy,India received many real benefits.First, economically,India acquired strategic supports and assistance from America and the former Soviet Union.Second, politically, this policy ensured the security and stability of India and promoted its international status.Third, this policy laid the diplomatic foundation of India’s dream of being a great power. On the basis of the above analysis, this thesis makes a deeper analysis of the non-aligned policy to find the answer to the major two disputes that whether the policy belongs to neutralism, realism or idealism. It also tries to explore the practical significance and modern value of the non-aligned policy in the contact among nations. The thesis suggests that the superiority of India’s diplomatic environment largely comes from its adherence to the non-aligned neutralism foreign policy and that the non-aligned diplomacy is still necessary in the process of international behavior.
