This thesis examined the role played by civil society in Zimbabwean elections as represented by Zimbabwe Election Support Network.The concept of civil society in understanding the Zimbabwean post-colonial governance in regards to elections was explored.Cognizant of the fact that civil society organizations' role has been downplayed and civil society organizations have been termed enemies of the state which operate in coalition with opposition political parties to fufill the regime change agenda a detailed analysis was made.Renowned scholars and authors' works in the related field were reviewed to establish their verdict on the role of civil society organizations from the pre-election to the post-election period.Complex dynamics of state-civil society relations were looked at and an examination of the formation,structure and programs of Zimbabwe Election Support Network they undertake throughout the electoral cycle.The researcher employed qualitative analysis and presentation of data to bring on board a critical analysis of the matter under discussion.It was established that civil society organizations have played a significant role in research advocacy,voter education and monitoring and observing of elections.Conclusions were made and recommendations that civil society organizations should not work in antagonism with the state but rather compliment the role played by state in elections and to remain apolitical in dispensing their duties so as to promote effectiveness and efficiency.
