Philippine nationalism is an important factor that cannot be ignored in influencing Philippine's domestic and foreign affairs.Based on the achievements of previous studies, this article explores the impact of Philippine nationalism on the foreign policy of the early years of independence(1946-1965).The Philippine nation can be defined as a political race made up of the Tagalog and other minorities.Filipino nationalism can be simply defined as state nationalism centered on the Philippines' "national interest" and the independence of the Philippines.Such nationalism is manifested through the state. The issue to be solved in this paper is how Filipino nationalism affected the foreign policy of the Philippines during the early period of independence.Specifically, the article focuses on two major issues: first, what is Philippine nationalism;second, how Philippine nationalism affects foreign policy, its processes, its role and its consequences.First of all,the Philippines is a multi-ethnic country. The national consciousness of all ethnic groups in the long-term interaction within the existing colonial system has gradually increased. In the struggle against colonialism,a political community transcending ethnic groups has gradually emerged: the Philippine nation.Striving for complete independence and safeguarding the interests of the nation has become the core goal of Philippine nationalism in the early period of independence.Secondly,Philippine nationalism gradually formed and perfected in the process of resisting foreign colonialism, and its pursuit of complete national self-determination and national independence became the core pursuit of its foreign policy. The Philippines has long followed the foreign policy of pursuing the United States. However, independent foreign policy is the direction of continuous efforts by Philippine nationalism. In the early years of independence, there were quite a lot of independent diplomatic practices,of which the foreign policy of the Macapagal period was typical.Diplomacy in the Philippines mainly presents into two forms, one is independent diplomacy, the other is bandwagon diplomacy.Philippine nationalism,as an important influencing factor in promoting an independent foreignpolicy, has its main function in the following three aspects.First,Philippine nationalism provides a rich source of ideas for an independent foreign policy.Second,Philippine nationalism provides the ideological support for the implementation of an independent foreign policy.Third,Philippine nationalism provides a mobilization tool for the realization of an independent foreign policy.
