After the end of the Cold War, Japan attempt to revise history through rehabilitation of textbooks and visiting Yasukuni shrine, and accomplish the construction of "strong Japan" by strengthening the Japan-US military alliance, sending troops overseas and revising its constitution and National Defense Program Outline. These have become mark of the rise of Japan’s new nationalism trend rising tide after the end of the Cold War. At present, Sino-Japanese relations are accompanied by chilly politics and hot economy, while territorial disputes have occurred. We can better grasp the trends of Japan’s foreign policy by studying the rise and development of Japan’s new nationalism during the post Cold War, in order to treat the Sino-Japanese bilateral relations problems and contradictions rationally and provide guidelines and references for reasonable foreign policies.Given that nationalism is a very complex social phenomenon, this paper analyzed nationalist concepts theoretically in order to define the scope of this paper. In addition, this paper divided nationalism into different types of forms with different characteristics on the basis of combinations of variable factors of nationalism in different periods. In research methods, this paper combined the structural factors and environmental factors of the rise of nationalism with the analytic hierarchy framework of neoclassical theory diplomatic realism, provide a more rational analysis framework for motives of rise of Japan’s new post-Cold War nationalist by interpreting from the system level, the national level, the social level, the individual level respectively.From the perspective of structural factors of the rise of nationalism, nationalism and national strategic objectives are closely related. After the Cold War, Japan has experienced three types of nationalism form with the economic power, political power, military power oriented national goal respectively including ingoing-dependence-self-improvement, outgoing-dependence-defense, outgoing-dependence -aggression.From the perspective of environmental factors of rise of nationalism, the formation of Japan’s new nationalism after the Cold War is a new pattern of international imbalances, special national geopolitical environment, the internal contradictions and social change as well as political and cultural elite and financial sector mobilization and many other factors. At the international system level, the uneven development process brought by globalization and the rapid rise a close "other" is the external motivation of the rise of Japan’s new nationalism. At the national level, the closed nature and vulnerability of Japanese geopolitical environment is indirect motivation of the rise of Japan’s new nationalism. At the social level, the disadvantages of Japanese politics, the lack of economic growth and academia and the media kidnapping opinion is the internal motivation of the rise of Japan’s new nationalism. At the individual level, the careful guidance of political and cultural elite and financial sector fueled a direct cause of the rise of Japan’s new nationalism.The rise of Japan’s new nationalism has an impact on Japan’s diplomacy in many ways. Japan’s new nationalism influences Japanese diplomacy diplomatic philosophy, foreign policy decisions and diplomatic practice through political elite, public opinion, the decision-making mechanism respectively. Its development and rising will not only enhance the political instability of the security of East Asian countries, but also provide a potential threat.to balance of East Asia area.
