The city image,as the concentrated reflection of the comprehensive strength of the city and the country,is an important part of the national development Strategy,which can?t be underestimated for the construction and rise of the city.At the beginning of this century,"elaborately shaping the city image with characteristics" has become the focus of urban construction work in China,and the city image has become the most important part of urban competition.However,the city image is not innate,but originates from the scientific management and the effective dissemination.Thus,the research of the city image has the important value.In 2016,General Secretary Xi Jinping said the new position of Chongqing,which is known as "two points" and "two places".This means that it is not only a new demand for Chongqing’s economic development,but also a new expectation for the development of social civilization in Chongqing.The author thinks that the direction of Chongqing’s image construction in the future should be consistent with the position of "two points" and "two Places",focusing on the promotion and output of economic image,strengthening the construction of cultural image of Chongqing,and highlighting the importance of shaping social image,such as ecology and life.Therefore,this paper focuses on Chongqing’s economic,cultural and social image.In order to know the city image of Chongqing in the world,and so as to make suggestions for the promotion of Chongqing’s external image,this paper takes the relevant reports of the New York Times as a sample,combines the theory of urban image and news frame,uses the method of content analysis,text analysis and case analysis to analyze Chongqing economic,cultural and social three kinds of city image over the past 20 years qualitatively and quantitatively.Firstly,the author quantitatively studies the reports from The New York Times from June 18,1997 to June 18,2017 by content analysis,and analyzes the quantity,news source and fact selection tendency of related reports.Then,by dividing the key chapters of economic image,cultural image and social image,using the method of text analysis,the paper analyzes the reporting language of the New York Times with the case study,concretely launches the news frame of the newspaper in constructing Chongqing image.The study found that the New York Times showed a positive tendency in presenting Chongqing’s economic image with vigorous economic development,superior investment environment and limitless potential.However,in the construction of Chongqing’s social image,it tends to report negative information about natural disasters and public safety problems in Chongqing.In addition,in these related reports,it tended to cover Chongqing’s history and culture,but pay less attention to the modernization of Chongqing achievements.In recent years,the study of urban image based on international media has focused more on Shanghai,Beijing and Tibet.However,the research results of Chongqing? image communication are less,and the quantity of sample is insufficient.Therefore,this paper may be a breakthrough.
