In the late Qing Dynasty,China suffered from internal and external troubles,and the whole society presented an uncle-like scene.After the Opium War and the defeat of China,the Qing Dynasty was forced to open its doors and integrate into the world.China is facing unprecedented changes in 3000 years.Zeng Guofan,as the leader of the prominent ministers in Tongzhi,had obvious characteristics of the times in his thought of law.As a traditional Confucian intellectuals,Zeng Guofan abided by righteousness and principles all his life,and took himself as a guardian of the Taoism,invigorating troops to suppress the peasant uprising in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom.As a minister of Foreign Affairs who knows current affairs,Zeng Guofan manages the world with courtesy and establishes foreign affairs to strengthen himself and resist insults.Neo-Confucianism of Cheng and Zhu is the theoretical basis of Zeng Guofan's thought of law.He inherited the dualistic view of the universe,the theory of Li Yi Qi SHUand the theory of Li Yi FEN SHU.He believed that if we want to achieve happiness in the world,we must obey the principle of XING and MING.In order to obey the principle of XING and MING needs renaturation.Renaturation needs GEWU?CHENGYI.GEWU is to understand REN and YI.CHENGYI is to practice REN and YI.Therefore,Zeng Guofan opposed not only ignoring XINGMING and harming REN and YI,but also talking about XINGMING and not practicing REN and YI.Zeng Guofan adheres to the rule of etiquette.He regarded propriety as a universally binding code of conduct.The core value of propriety is REN and YI.With REN and YI as the core,propriety can be adapted flexible.Zeng Guofan tries hard to realize the obedience of the whole society to the etiquette through the courtesy autonomy and the rule of propriety.In dealing with uncourteous behavior,he argued for courteous punishment.In the face of bandits,he severely punished;in the face of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom,he was severely punished with a soldier,enlivened soldiers crusade.Zeng Guofan's greatest contribution to traditional etiquette is to communicate HANXUE with SONGXUE.He recognized Yao Nai's classification of traditional etiquette and jurisprudence into the study of justice,textual research and the study of Ci and zhang.Withthe deepening understanding of HANXUE and SONGXUE,Zeng Guofan separated the theory of Managing the world from the theory of righteousness,and corresponded the theory of righteousness,the theory of Ci and zhang,the theory of Managing the world,and the theory of textual research with the four disciplines of Confucius one by one.Yao Nai academized the traditional etiquette law into three,Zeng Guofan transformed it into three into four and four into one,thus realizing the return of Confucius' academy and communicating HANXUE and SONGXUE.Zeng Guofan is the inevitable result of his belief in life.His insistence on the study of justice and theory reflects the conservatism of his thought of law,and his pioneering of the study of economics reflects his responsibility in the face of the present situation.He is the epitome of Chinese traditional legal thought.
