At present, large and medium-sized cities in China are facing serious traffic congestion. Many road traffic management departments carry out various road traffic designs to meet traffic demand and alleviate traffic congestion. This demand-oriented traffic design often changes the original function of the local road section, which makes the deviation between the two roads of the same level or even sections of the same road more inconsistent, which destroys the selfexplainability of the road. Then the driver's situational awareness is not compatible with the actual road condition during the drive. As the result, they can`t create the schema and rely mainly on traffic signs and other facilities. The driving burden and traffic safety risks are increased and the traffic order is disordered. This paper is divided into two parts. In the theoretical part,we first summarize the various forms of demand-oriented traffic design. Then the three principles of self-explaining roads are analyzed for their possible consequences. Finally, the situational awareness theory is introduced to interpret the cognitive process of the drivers. The distributed situational awareness theory is used to explain the relationship between the self-explaining roads and the driver's cognitive psychology, and analyze the deep reasons for the adverse consequences of demand-oriented traffic design. In the experimental part, two typical roads were first selected for comparative experiments, one as the experimental group and the other(after the demand-oriented traffic design)as the control group. Then we recruit drivers to use the semi-natural driving method and think aloud method to collect the drivers voice data, and use the complex network analysis method to establish a semantic network for the corpus. Finally,by analyzing the macroscopic indicators of the semantic network and the microdata,we analyze and discuss the differences between the two experimental roads and get the conclusion that the demand-oriented traffic design leads to poor self-explainability.The theoretical part is to analyze the possible consequences of demand-oriented traffic design by using the self-explaining road concept and situational awareness theory. The experimental part is to collect data by semi-natural driving method, analyze data by semantic network and complex network analysis method. Then verifying demand-oriented road design leads to a reduction in road self-interpretation.
