Frederick R Jameson is a famous marxist in the United States. Some people call him together with Terry Eagleton of Britain and Jürgen Habermas of Germany as the three giants in the field of western marxist theory.Jameson's early tolalization is concentrated in three works, including Marxism and Form(1971),The Prison-House of Language(1971)and The Political Unconscious(1981).In the face of new changes in capitalism and the transformation of western consumer society,Jameson used mode of production theory as the main tool of historical analysis,Divided capitalism into three stages,Proposed that capitalism experienced laissez-faire capitalism(classical or national market capitalism capitalism),imperialism(monopoly capitalism)and late capitalism(multinational capitalism). On this basis,Jameson corresponds these three technology or capital stages of developmen to different periods of cultural development.Market capitalism corresponds to realism, monopoly capitalism corresponds to modernism, multinational capitalism corresponds to postmodernism. In this way,Cultural change is like technological revolution or capital development, changed according to the change of production. This paper consists of three parts:The first part is the realistic condition and theoretical source of Jameson's early tolalization. These realistic condition include the realistic background of the new changes of capitalism, rejecting the theory of the end of socialism and the need to counter the siege of “anti-totality” thought, and its theoretical source mainly absorbs Marx,Lukács and others' tolalization. The second part is the basic content of Jameson's early tolalization. It mainly examines each mode of production as a synchronic system with different levels, reveal the society as a whole,it is determined by composite multivariate. In order to find a real connection between ideology and economic fundamentals, politics, law, etc,Jameson put forward an original concept:ideological element. The cultural revolution achieved the transition from one mode of production to another. The law of structural causality is the refutation of the law of expressive causality, emphasizing diversity, heterogeneity, against identity. In this regard,Jameson's early tolalization is pluralistic and open.Thethird part is the significance and limitation of Jameson's early tolalization. It affirms his defense of Marxism's tolalization,a new way he provided to understand Marxism and a new perspective to analyze late capitalism.Jameson's early tolalization firmly maintained and reinterpreted the Marxism tolalization. It can help us grasp the general characteristics of the whole era in our times, also provides a reference for us to understand the socialist thought with Chinese characteristics in the new era.
