Religious extremism is a major threat to social stability in Xinjiang and national security of China. It has distinct political, deceptive, violent, extreme and illegal nature.Adhering to the guidance of Marxist basic ideas and combing the theory with actual cases, from the perspective of the holistic review of national security, this thesis presents a more comprehensive analysis of the origin, harm and evolution of Xinjiang religious extremism. In addition, some specific coping strategies which has strong academic innovation and certain practical significance are proposed. In terms of research methods, this paper combs and interprets some relevant historical documents, policies and regulations by literature method. And combining quantitative and qualitative methods,75 incidents of terrorism with extreme religious background from 2008 to2016 and 140 cases investigated and punished legally in Xinjiang since 2017 are statistically analyzed. This article believes that treating the issue of religious extremism in Xinjiang with the holistic review of national security open a new road to study the issue. We can draw the following conclusion: Firstly, the formation and development of religious extremism in Xinjiang has both external and internal factors.Among the external factors, the spread and transformation of the "Pan-Islamism and Pan-Turkism" ideology is the most important, including the intervention of foreign religious extreme forces and Western anti-China forces, the contemporary Islamic Revival Movement, and the turmoil and impact of the "Islamic Arc Belt".In terms of internal source factors, various social problems such as backward economic development in some area of Xinjiang, poverty of local populations, and low levels of cultural education have created an objective environment for the spread and development of religious extremism.Secondly,Xinjiang 's religious extremism has features such as escalating violent means, increasingly networked communication methods, increasing female members, infiltrating the target group with lower age and higher education, expanding the scope of activities outside the territory, and the religious tendency that seeks to divest itself of all Chinese elements becoming more prominent.Thirdly,Xinjiang religious extremism poses a real threat to both traditional security fields, such as the national security, political security, military security, and non-traditional security fields, such as economic, cultural, social, network and overseas interest's security. On this basis, this article believes that the governance of religious extremism in Xinjiang is a long-term,complex,and sharp project. We must take the holistic review of national security and comprehensively use political, economic, cultural, social, and network methods. This kind of method insists on law-based governance, addressing both the symptoms and root causes ofcorruption with combined measures of punishment and prevention simultaneously to eradicate the breeding ground for religious extremism, and finally achieving the ultimate victory in the struggle for de-radicalization.
