Sequence is one of the important section of mathematics in senior high school,and it is an important theme for cultivating students' mathematical ability.Therefore,Mathematics curriculum standard makes great demand on the teaching of sequence and attaches great importance to students' deep understanding.However,teachers in senior high schools fail to know enough about students' understanding of sequence.So base on the SOLO(Structure of the Observed Learning Outcome)taxonomy theory,an investigation is conducted on grade 10 students' SOLO understanding level of sequence.Through combing concerned literature,I make a review of researches about teaching the problem solving of sequence and,theories on mathematical understanding and the SOLO taxonomy.Then the objects' learning status and situation of teaching on the basic concepts,properties,general formulas and summation of sequence are studied through observing,testing and interviewing.which include the testing for 274 grade 10 students in three schools by self making sequence module test.After the testing,an interview is conducted for 12 students picked out of different understanding levels of each dimension,in order to understanding students' learning methods and habits.By attending the mathematics lessons of the surveyed class,I get to know the situation of classteaching and students' homework.After analyzing the outcome of the research,I draw the conclusions as follows: 1)students vary in their levels of the basic concepts,characteristics,general formulas and summation of sequence.Mostly their levels are at multi-structure level,and not so high level of understanding.2)There are several(1)factors affect students' understanding level: Students' understanding level of the concept of function and its(2)characteristics,Degree of emphasis puted by teachers on the teaching of the concept of(3)(4)sequence,teachers' arrangements of sequence teaching content in each lesson,whether or not can students understand the calculation of the formulas,(5)status of students in(6)lessons,students' attitudes towards their homework.Lastly,several suggestions are puted forward on teaching of sequence:(1)diging into the teaching material and reducing the difficulty,(2)cultivating student's ability of generalization,(3)developing students' skills of analysizing problem,(4)cultivating students' good habit of studying.
