In recent years,the promotion of Chinese has been flourishing in the US,which attracts more and more elementary and secondary schools to offer Chinese courses.In the teaching process,the teaching methods not only decide the teaching effect,but also affect people's attitudes towards the Chinese class.Therefore,it's very important to choose proper teaching methods,which should conform to the national conditions of the US and be easy to be carried out.From September 2016 to June 2017,the author worked as a Chinese teacher at Valley School of Ligonier in PA,and the Task-based Language Teaching(TBLT)was applied.This led to the study of the application of TBLT in the elementary oral Chinese class in American primary schools.This article focuses on the applicability,application mode,application effect and prospect of TBLT.Literature search and classification,investigation and individual interviews are the the main research methods.First,through the study of American foreign language,policy,foreign language teaching standards,the particularity of elementary Chinese class,theenvironment of primary school education and the characteristics of child learners,the conclusion is drawn that TBLT is suitable for elementary oral Chinese class in primary schools in the US.Secondly,with Jane Willis's framework(Pre-Task,Task-Cycle and Language Focus)as the theoretical basis,the author induces three kinds of tasks from herteaching experience,including games,performance and hands-on activities.Thirdly,the result of questionnaires and individual interviews shows that most teachers and students prefer and expect TBLT to be further promoted.At last,the author puts forward five suggestions for Chinese teachers,including insisting student-centered teaching,using the classic framework,controlling the task intensity,implementing the task by level and avoiding unchanging.For Valley School,some specific tasks are provided for the topics of Chinese class in the 2nd Grade and the 4th Grade.
