The mother-tongue teaching material is essential to learning other subjects for every country,where from it can realize the culture,history and education concepts of a country.Chinese teaching materials play an vital part in our country and the subject,Chinese,is also throughout the whole life for everyone.There are broad and narrow concepts of teaching materials.The broad concept views the teaching materials as all materials used for teaching and learning.The narrow one considers teaching materials as teaching books.From all of these,we can see that teaching materials are really important.The education of America leads the world.If we want to know the reason of it,we should start with the study of the first language materials of America,attaching great importance to the features of teaching materials and selection and arrangement of teaching content.Therefore,this paper selects one book,the middle school edition of The Eclectic Readers that is the most historic and wide-used range in America as the blueprint for study.It is mainly divided into two types,the grammar class and the literature class.And this one is a typical literature one including English-Chinese and Chinese-English excerpts.The Eclectic Readers applies to age from 12 to 18,which amounts to the junior and senior high school teaching materials in our country.Choosing this book as the object of studying,it can help us to get better acquaintance of American education values.And then,we can find out the advantages of arrangement of this book and study and use for reference.At the same time,we also can research the shortcomings of it to warn us to avoid these matters in our compiling,which helps us to create more excellent Chinese teaching materials.The one selected in this paper is The Eclectic Readers that is inter translated by professor Ma HaoLan.This book remain the rest except some plays and poems because of their complexity and tediousness.This paper presents and analyzes the teaching content of The Eclectic Readers,which gives some results of features of layouts and contents,highlighting the enlightenment to the current Chinese language teaching materials.This paper contains five sections.The introduction part shows the essential questions of studying,including the reasons and values of selection of this topic,literature review,methods and train of thought of research.The first section is the background of the middle school edition of The Eclectic Readers,containing the basic theory and the overview of middle school edition of the American language teaching materials.The second section is the structure and analysis of The Eclectic Readers,which is composed of composition and analysis of selection system,reading system and exercising system.The third section is the features of The Eclectic Readers,which include the characteristics of composition and culture and disadvantages of teaching content.The fourth part is the revelation to our middle school Chinese language teaching materials.This part mainly consists of the conclusion of the current situations of Chinese language teaching materials,the comparative analysis between middle school edition of American language teaching materials and our current Chinese language teaching materials,and the enlightenment of middle school edition of American language teaching material to compiling of Chinese teaching material and the revelation of the use of Chinese textbooks in middle schools.
