Since the 1980s,with the reform and opening up of China and the advancement of urbanization,a large number of rural laborers have moved to cities.Due to the restriction of the urban-rural divisional household registration system and the dual social structure, children can’t follow the parents to the city, resulting in a large number of left-behind children.Parents entering the cities to work,on the one hand, effectively improves the family’s economic status in a short period of time, accelerates the modernization process of themselves and their families,on the other hand causes the children to be separated from their parents for a long time, which are prone the children’s physically and mentally to problems, then affects their education status.Under the background of migrant working parents’,this article discusses the impact of parents’ migrant work on the education of their children left behind, from the perspective of academic achievement and self-expectation in education. We found that left-behind children and non-left-behind children have large differences in academic performance and self-expectation in education. The previous study showed that, the young left behind children were more sensitive to their parents’ outgoing. In this paper, the 10-15 year old left behind children were taken as the research object.Based on the data of the Chinese family tracking survey(CFPS)in 2014.First of all, analysis there education present situation from these aspects:the education evaluation of the left behind children,The degree of family importance to education, the state of life, the expectation of education, and so on.Then, according to the results of descriptive analysis, the empirical analysis is divided into two parts:academic achievement and self-expectation in education. In each part, the parents’ education expectation is introduced as an intermediary mechanism to explore the impact of parental work on the academic achievement and self-expectation in education of the left-behind children. There are several conclusions in this paper based on the analysis of 2014 CFPS data using Multivariate Linear Regression Model.(1)The results based on cross-sectional data of the sample are roughly consistent with the previous study.Migrating parents are proved to have negative effects on the education of left-behind children in a certain degree, which can be seen from two aspects that left-behind children have poorer comprehensive academic performance as well as lower self-expectation in education compared with non-left-behind children.(2)Compared with non-left-behind children, migrating parents have negative effects on their children’s academic performance and self-expectation in education in some degree regardless of the combination ways of them go out to work. However for migrating parents, parents’ expectation in education can be improved so as to partly counteract the negative effects.(3)The "caregiving effect" of mother is greater than the "income effect" of father, which can be explained by the fact that left-behind children between the ages of 10 and 15 are more affected by their mothers and the lack of maternal role has a significant negative effect on their children’s education. As a result, children only whose mothers working outside have poorer academic performance and lower self-expectation in education, while children only whose fathers working outside have better academic performance than non-left-behind children. The reason may be that mother’s role in caring for children improves their children’s academic performance, while father’s income provides more economic support for their children’s education, which positively affected their children’s academic performance.(4)In terms of working distance,it is also consistent with the above conclusion. When parents especially mothers work in their own county help their children get better academic performance and improve their children’s education willingness. When mothers work outside province,it has significant negative effects on the education expectation of their families and their children’s academic performance.(5)In terms of occupational, children whose parents have stable wage employment tend to get better academic performance compared with those whose parents are migrant workers, but there is no significant difference compared with those whose parents get non-agricultural self-employed occupations, and father’s occupation has the most significant effect on children’s academic performance. There is no significant effect between parents’ occupations and their children’s self-expectation in education.(6)Parents,education expectation may play a role as an important mediator variable through which migrating parents affect their children’s academic performance and self-expectations in education.
