The Teaching Assistant Association of Wisconsin-Madison university founded in 1960s.The 1960s is a different age in American history,full of Campus Democracy movement,anti-war peace movement,feminism movement,etc.At this environment,the Teaching Assistant Association of Wisconsin-Madison is the first of graduate student union was recognized by UW.The Teaching Assistant Association of Wisconsin-Madison is the object of study at this paper,systematic discourse the history development of Teaching Assistant Association from 1960s to 1980s.Chapter One analysis and review the established background of Teaching Assistant Association at the university of Wisconsin-Madison.At the background of the student rebel movement,the democracy history of Wisconsin state,impact of collective bargaining in higher education area,graduate teaching assistant are dissatisfied with their roles,Teaching Assistant Association has been established.Chapter Two discussion the history development of Teaching Assistant Association at the university of Wisconsin-Madison from 1960s to 1980s.There are three stages:a preliminary development of Teaching Assistant Association in the 1960s,Teaching Assistant Association was in a stable stage of development in the 1970s,Teaching Assistant Association was in a zigzags development stage in the 1980s.In1966,Teaching Assistant Association are established.In1969,Teaching Assistant Association has signed collective bargaining agreement with university,the university of Wisconsin-Madison recognize the Teaching Assistant Association as the exclusive bargaining representative for graduate teaching assistants.In1970,Teaching Assistant Association signing the first contract with the university through a strike.Throughout the 1970s,Teaching Assistant Association signed four contracts with the university to maintain the rights and interests of graduate teaching assistant.In1980,Teaching Assistant Association collective bargaining about the new contract with the university,but failing to reach an agreement.Teaching Assistant Association launched a second strike,the strike was not successful,the university canceled collective bargaining relationship with Teaching Assistant Association.The suspension of collective bargaining relationship is not the development history end of Teaching Assistant Association in 1980,after years of Teaching Assistant Association effort,Wisconsin state issued regulation granted graduate teaching assistant collective bargaining rights.Chapter Three analysis of the impact of Teaching Assistant Association at the university of Wisconsin-Madison.Teaching Assistant Association has maintained the interests and rights of graduate teaching assistant,promoted the democratic management of university,provided a precedent for other university graduate teaching assistant establish union.Meanwhile,it also has negative effects,such as undermining the harmonious relationship between professors and graduate student,deepened the commercialization of university academic relations.Through study on the history development of Teaching Assistant Association at the university of Wisconsin-Madison from 1960s to 1980s.we finds out,the graduate teaching assistant as part of university influence on the development of university.The process of Teaching Assistant Association collective bargaining with university,not only maintained the interests and rights of graduate teaching assistant,contributes to the democratization of education and management of university.Through study on the history development of Teaching Assistant Association at the university of Wisconsin-Madison,it will provides useful reference for the management of graduate teaching assistant in Chinese university.
