The development of universities and disciplines constitute a closely related system in the current society.Disciplines form the foundation of universities and universities provide the support for disciplines.Therefore,it is indispensable for us to study the development of the construction of both disciplines and universities.This paper constructed the two-mode network of universities and disciplines by using the twomode network concept from social network analysis.The design of the network includes three elements,universities,disciplines and the connection between the two entities.The following parts will be analyzed and unfolded by the direct and indirect connections between the three elements.To analysis the characteristics of the special two-mode networks,the research focuses on the definition and properties of network.The definition covers the main characteristics of unweighted and weighted two-mode network.The analysis of network characteristics are expanded from the point of the physical and topological properties of the network,where the existence and differences of the elements like disciplines,universities and connections are included.In the construction of the link weight,the article adopts the reverse Zipf law to transform the rank of the discipline in the university to weight,which constructs the weight distribution system of each subject in accordance with the power law distribution.It covers direct contact measurement,indirect contact measurement,the similarity measure of universities and disciplines.In the analysis of measurement,the paper selected the top 1% disciplines of ESI global universities to measure and analyze the subjects of universities.Then we chose the ESI data of the United States and China as samples to compare the differences of network topologies.It found that China has a tendency to develop the disciplines like engineering,chemistry,material science and others.The United States shows its development advantages in multidisciplinary,social science,economies and business.In the analysis,according to the different stages of development of the first-class disciplines in universities,the development and distribution of the first-class disciplines are analyzed in four stages by the number of disciplines,which is 1-5,6-10,11-15,16-22.The core structure of four sub-networks experienced the development process by dispersion,cluster,specialized,comprehensive,where the complexity in the process of the first-class academic institutions is gradually reduced.In the application of the two-mode network,this paper selects the extensibility of it to construct the multi-mode network of discipline,universities and cities.It reflects the wide-range of application characteristics of discipline background in the two-mode networks.In summary,the network of universities and subjects,as a kind of special two mode network,can be used to the higher education,scientific evaluation,city innovation and other aspects.The method reflects the comprehensive research system under the application of social network analysis,higher education,and information science.It can be applied to the higher education strategies of China in the future.
