This paper summarizes the educational philosophies,teaching ideas and editing characteristics of John Thompson by analyzing and studying his three courses,i.e.Teaching Little Fingers to Play,John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course and John Thompson's Modern Course,thus evaluating the historical and practical values of Thompson's teaching courses in basic piano teaching for children.Firstly,the paper briefly introduces John Thompson's piano courses for children,including the origin,background,publication and application status in America and all around the world(especially in China),in order to demonstrate the practical significance of this academic study.Then,the paper uses analytical induction method to analyze the structure and content of Thompson's three teaching courses and on that basis attaches great importance to Thompson's educational philosophies,teaching ideas and characteristics.The paper confirms the rationality of Thompson's educational philosophies and the teaching values of the courses whereas the one-sidedness and limitations of the courses have been concluded as well.Finally,closely combined with the teaching practice,the paper provides comments and suggestions on the proper use of Thompson's teaching courses.
