Research On Coach Gary's Defense Philosophy Of WCBA Shanghai Team In 2017-2018 Season

With the development of modern basketball,defense plays a more and more important role in the game.In 2017-2018 season WCBA Shanghai team invited the assistant coach and temporary head coach Gary Kloppenburg of WNBA Seattle Storm Team in order to remedy weaknesses in team defense and better prepare for the playoffs and championships.From the coach,the team finally studied the advanced defense philosophy and established an effective defense.As a result the team performed well in both offense and defense and got third in the league.With the author's experiences as the video analyst for Shanghai Team and communication with coaches,by using the method of literature,field survey method,interview method,video analysis,this paper studied Coach Gary Kloppenburg's advanced defense philosophy from three aspects which are defense principles,methods and applications in the playoff,in order to provide reference for Shanghai team's defense training in the future and the team defense development of women's basketball in China.Conclusions:(1)Constant pressure and disruption is the main idea of Coach Gary's defense philosophy.It requires the defenders to initiate the action,force the offense to make corresponding response according to the intention of the defense,make them stay away from the accustomed offense area,and disrupt the execution of their offense plays.(2)To defend the on-ball player,defender need to not only set strong pressure,but also force the dribbler " to checkpoint","to the edge".To defend the off-ball player,the defender denies the pass to the player one-pass away.If the ball is on the wing,the weak side defender get back in the weak side "I" and the low post on theblock go full-fronted.If the dribbler is forced to the baseline checkpoint,the defenders stop the ball with a hard trap.To defend the screen,the defenders do "contact switch".To defend the pick-and-rolls that occur below the wing,defenders use "double-team".If pick-and-rolls that take place above the wing,defenders use "blue"."Double-team" and "contact and" can be used as well and the defenders need to communicate with each other.(3)After the offense makes a shot or a free throw,defenders use the "shadow" full-court pressure defense.The defender in the "shadow" position has three options including trap,hold or jump switch.(4)The defense should play according to the characteristics of the offense.With Jiangsu Team did well in perimeter shooting,the defense used close-out and contact switch to reduce the open shots or the shots in the hot spots for the shooters.With Beijing Team did well in the paint,the defense used be aggressively contact switch to let the bigs stay in the paint or used trap when the ball was passed to the low post.(5)The formation of Coach Gary's defense philosophy t is related to his growing experience and coaching experience.Good education experience is the theory basis.Rich coaching experience is the practice basis.Family background of basketball is the environment basis.American basketball culture is the culture basis.
